pavillon 666 => Salut Stephan Gebédi. Bon, il semble que vous avez toujours plus ou moins changé votre son et votre musique d'album en album. Dirais-tu que c'est le moment de sortie d'un cd qui détermine cela ou alors votre musique suit-elle directement vos souhaits du moment et change naturellement année après année?

Bonjour, bon alors en fait je ne pense pas du tout que notre style change avec chaque album... Nous restons plutôt fidèles à notre mélange de thrash et de death metal depuis le tout premier album et nous n'avons jamais dévié de ce chemin. Bien sûr la production et le son sont différents selon chaque album car nous avons travaillé avec différents labels et producteurs, mais le style de notre musique ne change pas. Nous essayons toujours de garder le meilleur son possible.

pavillon 666 => Nous sommes au courant de vos influences death et thrash old-school, en particulier la prolifique scène hollandaise car vous êtes impliqués au sein même de celle-ci depuis longtemps... Mais avez-vous d'autres influences cruciales? Peut-être aussi au-delà de la musique?


Oh bien sûr... J'ai grandi avec Black Sabbath, Kiss, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden et j'aime toujours beaucoup ces groupes. J'étais aussi un grand fan de la NWOBHM dans son ensemble avec Raven, Satan, Venom, Blitzkrieg, Holocaust, etc... Au-delà de la musique, mes deux plus grandes influences sont les films d'horreur (particulièrement les vieux films italiens quoique récemment j'ai aussi découvert de grands films français du genre comme “Haute Tension” et “Frontières”) et cette malédiction du genre humain nommée “religion”.
La religion est une grande inspiration de mes textes car elle est tellement dangereuse: regardez tous les problèmes causés par l'Islam et le Christianisme ces temps-ci, toutes ces guerres, toute cette haine... Le monde serait un meilleur endroit sans la religion organisée.


pavillon 666 => Penses-tu que c'est le bon moment concernant Thanatos pour vous détacher du peloton des autres groupes de metal (même si vous n'êtes pas un groupe inconnu...)? Si tu préfères, est-ce que ce revival de metal old-school est approprié pour Thanatos et “Justified Genocide”?

Je ne pense absolument pas à ça. Nous jouons la musique que nous aimons jouer et voilà tout! Si beaucoup de gens achètent notre album, bien sûr, c'est une bonne chose, mais si ce n'est pas le cas je serai toujours fier de cet opus et nous continuerons naturellement dans le même style... Je pense que Bloodbath et Hail Of Bullets ont plus ou moins initié ce revival death metal old-school, alors si Thanatos peut en tirer profit, ce serait justifié, je suppose...


pavillon 666 => Bon très bien... Comment gérez-vous le temps et vos implications dans les autres groupes? Quelles sont vos priorités? Pour prendre un exemple, Melechesh et Hail Of Bullets sont de grosses formations donc ils doivent prendre plus de temps, non? Est-ce que Thanatos en souffre?

En effet c'est plutôt difficile à gérer... Je joue, m'occupe de tous les contacts et de la plupart des interviews dans deux groupes (ndlr: Thanatos et Hail Of Bullets), j'écris aussi pour Aardschok magazine, j'ai en plus un emploi qui me prend trente-deux heures par semaine, ma femme et ma fille... Donc vingt-quatre heures dans une journée ce n'est vraiment pas suffisant pour moi! C'est la même chose pour notre guitariste Paul qui joue dans Thanatos, Hail Of Bullets, Asphyx et travaille aussi en tant que professeur!

L'an passé, Hail Of Bullets constituait notre grande priorité, mais alors que Thanatos vient de sortir un album et qu'Asphyx en aura bientôt un prochain aussi nous nous concentrons bien plus sur ces deux groupes pour le moment. Nous avons des plannings de groupe conséquents alors nous faisons en sorte de ne pas booker les dates les unes sur les autres... Peu importe quand l'un de ces groupes sort un nouvel opus, les membres en question porteront leur attention sur cette formation en particulier. Nous avons déjà booké beaucoup de concerts pour 2009 avec Asphyx et Hail Of Bullets alors il ne reste plus beaucoup de temps pour ajouter des shows de Thanatos... mais nous essaierons d'en ajouter tout de même ici et là...


pavillon 666 => A propos de vos textes, à présent... J'ai reçu des notes à propos de ces dernières, justifiant le sujet de chaque titre de “Justified Genocide”. De quoi avez-vous peur exactement? Avez-vous une “mauvaise réputation” à cause de certaines paroles écrites par le passé? Est-ce que l'exemple d'Impaled Nazarene (pour prendre un groupe qui a eu beaucoup de problèmes avec son image) vous inquiète?

Non, nous n'avons absolument pas une mauvaise réputation à propos de paroles écrites par le passé... mais avec les sujets abordés par Hail Of Bullets nous avons remarqué à quel point certaines personnes étaient encore sensibles à des textes concernant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, particulièrement en Allemagne. Nous pensons que nos paroles sont explicites, d'ailleurs nous ne chantons qu'à propos de faits historiques et nous ne glorifions rien, mais pour éviter les malentendus nous avons décidé d'expliquer nos textes, voilà tout.
Et oui, en effet, le même problème est arrivé à Impaled Nazarene, un groupe très sympa dont les membres sont loin d'être nazis, mais ils sont interdits de jouer en Allemagne et doivent toujours se justifier... C'est pourquoi nous avons décider de tout clarifier dès le départ. Thanatos n'a jamais été un groupe politisé et ne le deviendra jamais.


pavillon 666 => Alors que tu es impliqué depuis si longtemps dans le metal extrême, parlons un peu de la scène hollandaise... Y'a-t-il des groupes que tu souhaiterais conseiller à nos web-lecteurs?

En ce moment, la scène hollandaise revient en pleine forme à nouveau. Des groupes comme Legion Of The Damned et Hail Of Bullets se débrouillent très bien, bien sûr. De nouveaux albums de Thanatos, Asphyx et God Dethroned viennent tout juste de sortir ou vont sortir dans quelques mois. Nox est de retour! ...Et depuis que beaucoup de ces gars vivent en Hollande tu peux même dire que Melechesh est un groupe batave... et c'est aussi un très bon groupe! Sinon les nouveaux venus sur le front se nomment Abode Of The Blessed (influences: Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal), The Lucifer Principle, Massive Assault, Remains, Devious et Dictated... Alors prenez garde à l'invasion hollandaise!

Hello Thanatos. Well it seems like you've ever changed your sound and your music album after album. Would you say that this is the time of release of a cd that determines it or does your stuff follow your wishes and changes naturally year after year?

Stephan: Hi, well I don't think our style changes with every album at all; we're pretty much faithfull to our mix of thrash and death metal since the 1st album and we never really strayed from that path. Of course the production and the sound of the individual albums are all different, cause we always work with different producers and labels, but not our style of music. We always try to get the best possible sound.

We are aware of your old-school death and thrash metal influences, in particular the prolific Dutch scene because you are implied within it for a long time... But have you got other crucial influences? And beyond music?

Oh sure, I grew up with bands like Black Sabbath, Kiss, Judas Priest, AC/DC and Iron Maiden and I still love those bands. I also was a big fan of the whole New Wave Of British Heavy Metal thing with bands like Raven, Satan, Venom, Blitzkrieg, Holocaust etc. Beyond music my two biggest influences are horror movies, (esp. the old Italian ones, but lately I've also seen some great French horror movies like Haute Tension and Frontières) and this curse of mankind called religion.Religion is a big lyrical inspiration cause it's so fucking dangerous; look at all the problems that are caused by Islam and Christianity these days; all the wars, all the hate. The world would be a much better place without (organised) religion.
Do you think that this is the good period for Thanatos to get out of the mass of the other metal bands (even if you are not, let's be honest, an unknown band...)? If you prefer, does this era of old-school metal revival is appropriated for Thanatos and “Justified Genocide”?
I really don't think about that. We simply play the music we love to play and that's it. If a lot of people buy this album then that's cool of course, but if noone buys it, I will still be proud of this album and we'll simply continue in the same style... I guess Bloodbath and Hail of Bullets more or less started this old school death metal revival, so if Thanatos has some profit from that would be justified I guess...

Okay, then... How do you manage time and implications in other bands? What are your priorities? For example, Melechesh and Hail Of Bullets are big bands so they should take a lot of time, no? Does Thanatos suffer of it?

Yes, that's quite hard to do actually...I play in 2 bands do all the band contacts and a lot of the interviews, I also write for Aardschok magazine, I have a regular job for 32 hours a week, a wife and a daughter...so 24 hours a day is really not enough for me! The same goes for our guitarist Paul, who plays in Thanatos, Hail of Bullets and Asphyx and also has a job as a teacher!
During the last year, Hail of Bullets definitely had our priority, but now Thanatos has a new album out and Asphyx will have a new one out soon, so we're concentrating on those bands as well now. We have a big band planning so we don't have double bookings with all the bands we play in. Whenever one of the bands has an album coming out that band will get extra attention from those bandmembers. We already had a lot of Hail of Bullets and Asphyx shows booked for 2009 so there's not much space to add a lot of Thanatos shows, but we'll try to squeeze a few in here and there....

Concerning the lyrics, now... I received some notes about it, justifying the topic of each song. What do you fear exactly? Have you got any “bad reputation” because of some lyrics you wrote in the past? Does the example of Impaled Nazarene (to pick a band that had a lot of problems with its image) afraids you a bit?

No, we definitely don't have a bad reputation for the lyrics we wrote in the past, but with the whole Hail of Bullets thing we noticed how sensitive certain people still are when you write about WWII, especially in Germany. We think our lyrics are very clear and we only sing about historical facts and do not glorify anything, but to avoid any misunderstandings we decided to explain the lyrics a little bit, thats all.
And yes, the same shit happened to Impaled Nazarene; a very cool band and definitely not nazis, but they got banned in Germany and had to explain everything all the time.. That's why we made our point of view clear from the start. Thanatos has never been a political band and will be never be one...

As long as you're implied for a long time into extreme metal, let's talk a bit about the Dutch scene, out of your other well-known projects, for example... Some bands you'd like to advise to our web-readers?

At the moment the Dutch scene is back at full force again. Bands like Legion of The Damned and Hail of Bullets are doing great of course. New strong albums from Thanatos, Asphyx and God Dethroned have just been released or will be released in a couple of months. Nox is back together. And since a lot of those guys live in Holland you could maybe even call Melechesh a Dutch band now and they're also doing great. Some new up and coming bands are Abode of the Blessed (Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal style), The Lucifer Principle, Massive Assault, Remains, Devious and Dictated...so watch out for the Dutch invasion
