1. Dzień dobry, vous êtes encore inconnu en France. Pouvez vous presenter brièvement votre line-up actuel et votre histoire musicale ?

Michal « Misiek » Rogala : Bonjour. (NdT : en français dans le texte) Le line-up actuel se compose de Maciek « Tektur » Nawrot au chant, Rafal « Lewy » Lewandowski aux guitares lead, Daniel « Beton » Grotkiewicz à la basse, Marek « Deviant » Kuczyński à la batterie et moi aux guitares rythmiques. Ce line-up s’est formé en Janvier. En Mars, notre dernier album “Follow The White Mouse” est sorti en international grâce au label ukrainien Metal Scrap Records, mais il est sorti en Pologne l’année dernière. En Mars, nous avons enregistré un single, notre première chanson avec des paroles en polonais et depuis Juin, nous écrivons pour notre prochain album, qui sera probablement réalisé l’année prochaine

2. Votre deuxième album vient de sortir. Pouvez-vous nous parler du processus pour le composer et l’enregistrer ? Il semble que ça a été un long processus pour le créer.

MR : Au contraire, la plupart de la musique a été écrit en seulement quatre mois. J’ai composé toute la musique avec notre batteur de l’époque Thor, et pratiquement tous les textes ont été écrits par Tektur. Nous avons enregistré l’album en un mois, le mixage et le mastering prenant encore un autre mois. Nous avons eu quelques grands invités sur cet album, en particulier Paul (Pandemonium) et Opath (Corruption). Tomasz Osieck joue un solo de cithare sur la chanson-titre.

3. Finalement, êtes-vous satisfaits par le résultat ?

MR : Avec le recul, je changerais probablement certaines choses, mais je suis quand même globalement satisfait.

4. Il y a deux chanteurs crédité sur le Cd mais il semble que vous ne jouez pas d’ordinaire avec deux chanteurs. Pouvez-vous expliquer pourquoi vous avez ces deux chanteurs sur l’enregistrement ?

MR : Ca a été une situation assez complexe. Pour commencer, Tektur nous a rejoints durant l’enregistrement de « Follow… » comme second guitariste et notre chanteur d’alors « Acid » était censé continuer à chanter. Mais accidentellement, Acid était en retard pour un enregistrement et Tektur a alors chanter deux titres… Et nous avons instantanément su quel serait le destin du nouvel arrivant. Pendant un certain temps, nous avons joué avec un seul chanteur, mais maintenant nous avons Beton qui est un excellent growleur, donc nous avons de nouveau deux voix.

5. Penchons nous sur le titre de cet album : « Follow The White Mouse » (Suivez la souris blanche). Quel est la signification de ce titre ? Est-ce que cette souris blanche, qui est aussi représentée sur les illustrations de l’album, a une signification spéciale pour vous ? Est-ce que c’est une mascotte comme Eddie pour Iron Maiden ou Vic Rattlehead pour Megadeth ?

MR : En Pologne, les souris blanches ne sont pas seulement des petits animaux sympathiques, elles sont vus par ceux qui abusent de l’alcool et tombent dans le délire (un peu comme les éléphants roses dans les pays anglo-saxons). Notre chanson ne parle pas seulement de l’alcool mais aussi des autres drogues. Le message est simplement que nous devons faire attention à ne pas abuser de l’alcool des drogues, ou autres… sans quoi nous pourrions nous réveiller un matin en voyant des souris blanches.

6. Même si vous êtes inconnus ici, vous avez eu l’opportunité chez vous de jouer avec des grands groupes comme Sabaton ou Paul Di Anno par exemple. Comment-était-ce ? Avez-vous eu l’occasion de discuter avec les membres des groupes ? Est-ce des bons souvenirs pour vous ?

MR : J’ai de très bons souvenirs de ces deux concerts, spécialement celui avec Paul Di Anno qui fut vraiment un grand show ! Nous n’avons pas eu l’opportunité de parler avec les gars de Sabaton, et Paul Di Anno était plutôt de mauvaise humeur ce jour-là donc pas très causant ! Mais ça a été sympa de discuter avec les gars de Tankard avec qui nous avons joué également.

7. Quelles sont les principales influences de Neuronia ? Quels groupes écoutez-vous couramment ? Avez-vous été influencé par la scène hardcore américaine ?

MR : Dans notre groupe, tout le monde écoute vraiment différent styles de musique. Deviant aime le grindcore. Beton écoute du death brutal mais est aussi un grand fan des Pink Floyd. Lewy aime le thrash classique mais écoute également énormément de musique progressive et Tektur écoute différents styles de musique, du punk-rock au black metal en passant par le stoner. Quand à moi, j’aime des groupes comme Metallica, Slayer, System of a Down, Paradise Lost mais aussi The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Prodigy…
Pour ce qui est du hardcore américain, j’ai été un immense fan de Biohazard, je les ai vu il y a un certain temps en concert à Varsovie, un grand show…

8. Comment décririez-vous votre musique en quelques mots ?

MR : Notre musique mêle différents styles, et c’est précisément ce que nous appelons Neuronia, ha ha ! C’est dùr de classer notre musique. Ca vient du cœur et ne se dirige pas vers un genre précis. Nous essayons d’avoir notre propre chemin et de juste jouer la musique que nous aimons.

9. Comment voyez-vous la scène metal (dans votre pays natal, le monde entier et pourquoi pas la France ;) ?

MR : Je pense que la scène polonaise et mondiale va plutôt bien et mieux encore pour les groupes célèbres, ha ha ha ! Il y a beaucoup de bons shows et de nouveaux albums sympas, donc pour citer Megadeth : « Business is good » (les affaires sont bonnes). Les gens écoutent toujours du metal et c’est bien de voir la renaissance de certains styles, en particulier le thrash. Pour ce qui est des nouveaux venus, c’est vraiment dur de percer mais en général, c’est encore meilleur.
Pour les groupes français, Massacra est l’un de mes favoris et « Final Holocaust » était un des meilleurs albums de l’époque, je le réécoute souvent. La scène française est plutôt grande maintenant et certainement l’une des plus innovantes avec des groupes comme Gojira, Dagoba, Deathspell Omega en chefs de file.

1. Dzień dobry, You are still unknown in France. Can you present your actual line-up and briefly your recent musical history?

Michał „Misiek” Rogala: Bonjour. The current line-up is Maciek „Tektur” Nawrot on vocals, Rafał „Lewy” Lewandowski on lead guitar, Daniel „Beton” Grotkiewicz on bass, Marek „Deviant” Kuczyński on drums and me on rhythm guitar. This line-up was formed this January. In March, our newest album – “Follow the White Mouse” had its international premiere thanks to the Ukrainian label Metal Scrap Records, but it debuted on the Polish market in March last year. This March we recorded a single – our first one with Polish lyrics, and since June we are writing some stuff for our next record, which will probably be released next year.

2. Your second full-length album just came out. Can you talk us about the process to compose and record it ? It seems that it has been a long process to create it.

MR: On the contrary, most of the material was written in just four months. I composed all the music with our then-drummer Thor, and almost all the lyrics were written by Tektur. We recorded the album in a month, the mixing and mastering process took another month. We had some great guests on the album, e.g. Paul (Pandemonium) and Opath (Corruption). Tomasz Osiecki laid down a sitar solo in the title track.

3. Eventually, are you fully happy with the result?

MR: Looking back, I would change a few things, but I’m generally satisfied with it.

4. There are two singers credited on the CD, but it seems that you dont play usually with two singers. Can you explain why you had two singers on the record?

MR: This was quite a complex situation. To start from the beginning – Tektur joined us during the recording of “Follow…” as a second guitarist and our then-vocalist Acid was to continue singing. Accidentally, Acid was late for one of the rehearsals and Tektur sung two tracks... and after that we instantly knew what fate would befall the latecomer. For quite a long period we have played with one vocalist, but now we have Beton who is an expert in growling, so we have two vocals again.

5. Let's concentrate about the title of this album: "Follow the White Mouse". What's the meaning of this title? Does the "white mouse" - which appears also on the cover of the album - have a special signification for you? Is it like Eddie for Iron Maiden or Vic Rattlehead for Megadeth?

MR: In Poland white mice are not just nice little animals – they are seen by those who overdo alcohol and fall into delirium (sort of like “pink elephants” in the English-speaking countries). Our song is not just about alcohol, but also other drugs. The message is that we all have to watch ourselves not to overdo alcohol or drugs, or else… we can wake up one night, seeing “white mice”.

6. Even if you're unknown here, you have had the opportunity in Poland to play with great bands such as Sabaton and Paul Di Anno. How did it was? Did you have the opportunity to talk with their band members? Is it a good thing to remember for you?

MR: I have great memories from those two concerts – especially the one with Di’Anno, because it was quite a big show! We didn’t have the opportunity to talk with the guys from Sabaton, and Di’Anno was in quite a bad mood this day – not very talkative! But it was great to chat with the guys from Tankard, with whom we have also played.

7. What are the main influences of Neuronia's music ? Which bands do you listen currently? Have you been influenced by the US-hardcore scene?

MR: In our band everyone really listens to very different sorts of music – Deviant loves grindcore, Beton listens to brutal death metal but also is a big fan of Pink Floyd. Lewy likes classic thrash, but also listens to a ton of progressive music, and Tektur also listens to different kinds of music, from punkrock through stoner to black metal. As for me, I like bands like Metallica, Slayer, System of a Down, Paradise Lost, but also The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Prodigy…
As for US-hardcore, I was once a huge fan of Biohazard, I’ve seen them live years ago in Warsaw, great show.

8. How would you self-describe your music in a few words?

MR: Our music blends several styles – and that’s precisely what we call Neuronia, haha! It’s hard to classify our music. It comes from the heart and doesn’t belong into one specific genre. We try to go our own way and just play the music that we like.

9. What is your vision of the metal scene (in your native country, worldwide and maybe France ;) ?

MR: I guess that the Polish and worldwide metal scene is in good condition – even better for famous bands, hahaha! There’s a lot of great shows and new cool albums, so – to quote Megadeth – business is good. People listen to metal again, and it’s nice to see the rebirth of some genres, especially thrash. For the newcoming bands, it’s quite hard to break through but in general, it’s getting better again.
As for the French bands, Massacra is one of my favourites and “Final Holocaust” was one of the best albums of that time – I often return to it. The French metal scene is quite big right now and certainly one of the most innovative, with bands like Gojira, Dagoba, Deathspell Omega leading the way.
