Spade Mayhem : Pouvez-vous décrire Helheim en quelques mots ?

Helheim : En voici trois : Paganisme et résistance !

S : En mars, vous vous êtes embarqués dans une mini-tournée et avez rendu visite à vos fans à Prague et Berlin, notamment, pour fêter le trentenaire de votre premier album \"Jormundgand\". Quels sont les moments qui vous ont le plus marqués lors de cette tournée anniversaire ?

H : Il y avait seulement 4 concerts et aucun d’entre eux n’était plus mémorable que les autres. Mais c’était un mini-tour vraiment sympa à faire, et nous étions agréablement surpris qu’autant de gens aient fait le déplacement et dévalisé notre merch ! Nous remercions notre public et aussi Honza, qui nous a accompagnés tout au long de ce mini-tour.

S : Le 1er mai dernier, l’album Blod & Ild a été réédité sur vinyle via Nomad Snakepit Records. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de ressortir cet album particulier plutôt que Jormundgand ?

H : En réalité, nous ne sommes pas à l’origine de ce projet, c’est le label Nomad Snakepit Records qui nous ont contactés en ce sens. Mais, Blod & Ild n’a jamais été distribué sous format vinyle auparavant, c’est totalement inédit par rapport à nos deux premiers albums. Vous pouvez déjà vous en procurer et bientôt, on en mettra d’autres à disposition.

S : Est-ce que vous pouvez nous raconter comment s’est passé l’enregistrement de Blod & Ild en 1999 ?

H : Nous avons enregistré l’album en 1999 dans le studio S.J.E.F. C’était un de mes collègues de travail qui gérait l’endroit, et il m’a convaincu qu’il était la personne qu’il me fallait pour cet enregistrement et moi, j’en ai parlé après au reste du groupe, qui était partant. Finalement, ce n’était pas vraiment l’homme de la situation, le processus a été très long et il s’avéra qu’il n’était pas aussi expérimenté à ce qu’il semblait de prime abord. Mais, tout ça, c’est de la vieille histoire et maintenant, lorsque j’écoute l’album, je trouve qu’il sonne… correctement. C’était aussi le premier album où nous étions quatre, ce qui a amené encore d’autres sujets de réflexion. Ce n’était pas une mauvaise chose en soi, mais à l’époque, c’était différent. Nous jouons en trio depuis pas mal de temps maintenant. À part ça, je n’ai pas grand chose d’autre à te raconter. Je ne me souviens de rien de particulier lors de l’enregistrement.

S : La réédition sort dans sa forme originelle, sans aucun mastering digital. Pourquoi avoir choisi de préserver le son de l’album ?

H : C’était la décision du label et nous n’avions pas d’avis à ce sujet.

S : Cet été, vous allez jouer au Beyond The Gates Festival— un moment spécial, puisque vous allez jouer à domicile aux côtés d’autres groupes mythiques tels qu’Abbath, Candlemass, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, et King Diamond. Avez-vous hâte d’y être ?

H : Ça va être un moment très spécial pour nous, car nous allons jouer tout l’album Jormundgand de A à Z. Que ce soit les morceaux hors metal ou ceux avec l’instrumentation additionnelle. Cela demande de beaucoup répéter, mais nous sommes prêts. Ainsi, nous avons tous très hâte de jouer sur scène ce jour-là.

S: En décembre 2024, vous avez annoncé la sortie d’un nouvel album, en publiant des vidéos captées lors de sessions d’enregistrement studio et publiée sur les réseaux. Quand ce nouvel album sortira-t-il ?

H : Le 20 juin (ndlr : L’album s’appelle HrabnaR / Ad Vesa et est dispo à la précommande chez Dark Essence Records)

Spade Mayhem : Can you describe Helheim in 5 words ?

Helheim : I’ll give you 3; Heathendom and resistance

S : You embarked on a mini-tour this March, visiting several cities including Berlin and Prague to celebrate the 30th anniversary of your debut album Jormundgand. What were some of your most memorable moments from those live shows?

H : There were only 4 shows, and none of them were more memorable than the other. It was all in all a very nice mini-tour, and we were surprised that so many people turned out for our shows and bought shitloads of merch. A big thanks to them all, and also to Honza who came along for all of the shows.

S : On May 1st, Blod & Ild will be reissued on vinyl via Nomad Snakepit Records. Why did you choose to revisit this particular album rather than Jormundgand for a re-release?

H : We didn’t choose anything as it was Nomad Snakepit records who contacted us. Anyway, since Blod & Ild has never been on vinyl before, it’s more exclusive than our first two records. There are some versions of them out there already, and there will be more.

S : Can you tell us a few stories about the recording process of “Blod and Ild” back in 1999?

H : We recorded the album in 1999 in a rather new studio called S.J.E.F. studio. It was a co-worker of mine who ran the studio, and he convinced me that he was the right man to do the job, and I convinced the rest of the band. It turned out that he was not the right man for the job. It was kind of a long struggle to record the album, and he really didn’t have as much control over the production that he initially told us. But it’s all ancient history, and while listening to the album now it sounds…ok. It was also the first album with two new members in the band, and this also led to more discussions. That in itself isn’t necessarily bad, but back then it was different for us. We’d been a trio for quite some time already. Other than that it’s not much to tell. There were no special incidents that happened in the studio that I can remember.

S : The reissue will be released in its original form, without any digital remastering. What led you to preserve it in such a raw and unaltered state?

H : That was the label\'s decision, and we had no thoughts around it.

S : This summer, you\'re set to play at Beyond The Gates Festival—a special moment, no doubt, performing on home turf alongside legendary acts like Abbath, Candlemass, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, and King Diamond. How excited are you for that show?

H : It will be one of the most special concerts we’ve ever done as we’re going to play Jormundgand in its entirety. With that meaning also the non-metal songs and with all the additional instrumentation. This requires a lot of rehearsing, but we’re already on time when it comes to this. So, all of us are pretty excited about this concert.

S : Back in December 2024, you announced a new release, by publishing studio videos on socials. When will this album be released ?

H : On June the 20th.
